On this page you will find the formation of the Friends of Llangiwg, the necessity of becoming
a Company limited by guarantee called the Llangiwg Community Association and the Charity Commission's acceptance of its
charitable status. This included: - The first duty of the Friends and sponsors was to establish how the
sponsors could transfer Llangiwg to the Friends. The Welsh Cooperative Society were very helpful and at no cost advised that
a not for profit Registered Company be set up in order that a lease for 99 years could be drawn up. They instructed us in
our responsibilities and supervised the application.
- The necessary forms were completed and witnessed for five
directors and a Company Secretary to apply for registration. As a result the officials of the Friends became Directors of
the Llangiwg Community Association on March 22nd.2008. Cynthia Mullan was appointed Company Secretary, Registered.Office,
18 Maesycwm, Ystradgynlais.SA9 1JR.The Company No. is 6451998
- On St.Ciwg's Day June 29th.2008 a 99 year lease
was completed and in September was entered into the Land Registry in Swansea.
- Becoming a registered Company and
being granted a 99year lease proved that no individual could benefit financially. This made possible our application to the
Charity Commission to become a registered charity. This was granted on September 10th 2008, with charity number 1125804.
- The benefits of this are many as there are many charitable bodies and funders who will only consider applications from
registered companies with charitable status. “Gift Aid” allows the tax on money donated to be recovered by the
Charity, increasing the value of the money gifted.
- There are two distinct responsibilities for what has become
our two organisations, The Friends of Llangiwg who are responsible for educational and social programming, and the Llangiwg
Community Association, who are responsible for the fabric and development of the building. We have a Memorandum of Understanding
between the two organisations.
The charity is presently working to develop a full restoration and refurbishment
programme for the church, and has recently engaged a consultant Chartered Surveyor to develop a scheme for the church. As
a result, we will be shortly embarking on a major fundraising programme to restore the church to its former glory and to develop
the building for a range of community uses.
